Golden, crispy onion rings are one of America’s favorite side dishes. With a light, crunchy coating and sweet onion inside, they’re perfect alongside burgers, sandwiches, or served as a snack with your favorite dipping sauce. This recipe creates restaurant-style onion rings right at home.
Ingredients
2 large sweet onions
1½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
½ tsp black pepper
1 tsp salt
1¼ cups cold sparkling water
2 cups panko breadcrumbs
Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings. Carefully separate the rings and set them aside.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Slowly pour in the cold sparkling water while whisking until you have a smooth batter.
Place the panko breadcrumbs in a separate bowl.
Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off, then coat thoroughly with the breadcrumbs.
Heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
Fry the onion rings in small batches for 2–3 minutes, turning occasionally until golden brown and crispy.
Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate and season lightly with salt while still hot.
Serve immediately with ranch dressing, spicy mayo, or your favorite dipping sauce
